ఈ పక్షి ఒక నీటి పక్షిట. అంటే curlew, heron, crane, sandpiper అని అనువాదం చెయ్యచ్చని ఒక సమీక్షలో కనిపించింది. ఒక సముద్రపు పక్షి. దానికి తెలుగు పేరు లేదన్నమాట!
‘క్రుఞ్ క్రౌఞ్చః’ అని అమరకోశం క్రౌంచపక్షికి క్రుఙ్, క్రౌంచః అని రెండు పేర్లు చెపుతుంది. ఈరెండు పేర్లూ ‘క్రుఞ్చ గతి, కౌటిల్య, అల్పభావయోః’ అనే ధాతువునుండి ఏర్పడినాయని –అంటే పంక్తిరూపముగా బోవునది, లేక కుటిలమై (వంకరగా) నుండునది – అని గురుబాలప్రబోధిక. కొంగ అని దీనికి తెలుగులో అర్థము వ్రాసినారు అమరంలో. కొంగలు బారులు దీరి పోవుట, వాటి శరీరనిర్మాణము వంకరగా నుండుటచే ఈవ్యుత్పత్తులు సరిపోయినవి.
ఈక్రౌంచశబ్దంయొక్క వికృతులే కొంచ, క్రొంచ అను తెలుఁగుపదాలు. ‘పసిఁడికీల్బొమ్మ మీపజ్జ నేగదు గదా కొంచలార, కొలంకుటంచలార!’ అని అచ్చతెనుఁగు రామాయణంలో కొంచలార=కొంగలార అనే అర్థంలో వాడిన కొంచశబ్దం. ‘చలాచలక్రౌంచ కారండవ మండలీ పటపటత్కారపటహారవంబులతో’ అని వసుచరిత్రము. ఈవాక్యంలో గల క్రౌంచకారండవాలకు క్రౌంచ=కొంగలయొక్కయు, కారండవ=కన్నెఱేడు పక్షులయొక్కయు అని సోమకవి వ్యాఖ్యానం.
ఈవిధంగా క్రౌంచపక్షి అంటే కొంగ అనడానికి సాహిత్యంలో అనేకప్రయోగము లున్నవి.

I’m a bit thickheaded – get it? Elephant’s head! The thought of connecting articles from different writers across various issues of the magazine was stopped in its tracks by that thickness.
