An excellent attempt. I believe there will be lots of interest among the audience for your attempts.
It took me back to my BTech and MTech days. We happened to be the first batch in BTech to study Computer Programming as a subject. We were really scared and I thought I might never be able to use a computer. Though my team was the first to produce BTech Project work using a Casio FX-720P programmable calculator, the fear never receded.
In a surprising turn, I joined in IITKanpur in 1984 for MTech. Though my specialisation was Transportation Systems Engineering, we were one of the heavy users of Computers. IITKanpur used to have one of biggest Online Computer those days, DEC-System 1090, and they liberally allowed all the students to use the computer to their fullest potential, running the computer centre almost 24×7. Rajaraman’s book was the first entry to start intereacting with the DEC-10. That’s really a memorable experience.
Coming to some of the observations you mentioned, I have some reflections to share. Having joined in IT industry in 1985, my own initial fears, and later the people’s thinking about the computers around, prompted to me to explain what this wonderful machine was all about, what it might not do. A version of this paper, ‘A Diagnostic View on Information Technology,’ appeared in ACM-SEN in 1992. I tried to take away the fears of the people, by declaring, ‘A computer is no more powerful than its user.’
Regarding the other part on P/NP issues, and a great deal of imagination set forth on Aritificial Intelligence, prompted me to write an unpublished article, ‘Reflections on AI.’ The arguement concedes that a computer can never match the reasoning of a human, and explains the rationality for a such thing with a simple example on how a computer evaluates an arithmatic equation.
Thanks for letting me recollect those feelings, and I appreciate your efforts. Please, continue to write.
