Prefatory note
During the past five decades in the USA, I have had the pleasure of attending numerous wedding ceremonies of several faiths. In all the faiths, the wedding ceremony is considered as a solemn occasion. The vows taken by the bride and groom in the presence of the invited guests are considered sacred.
The Hindu marriage ceremonies are usually elaborate, mixed with fun and frolic, and the noise created by the undue importance given to the pompous exhibition of wealth, I felt, often subjugates the solemnity.
Last year, on September 8 of 2019, I was asked to perform a vedic Hindu wedding in Nashville, Tennessee. The bride is a white American young lady and the groom is a young Telugu Brahmin. Both were born in the USA and were brought up as Americans. Their parents and they themselves wanted a solemn Hindu wedding giving importance to the vedic rituals. The following is the script I prepared and used it to perform their wedding. The entire ceremony was performed in 25 minutes. (The presiding lady who later performed a non-denominational wedding just prior to the reception dinner liked the seven-step (saptapadi) ritual so much, she adopted it into her ceremony.)
I did not literally translate the Sanskrit verses, but trans-created the essence in English.
Vedic Wedding: Chapter 1
The following prayer should be recited by the bridegroom, standing with folded hands facing the invited guests.
If the groom cannot recite, the priest can recite and the groom says ‘mama’; meaning, me too! Also, through out the ceremony the priest can ask the groom to recite the English sentences while and after he recites the Sanskrit Slokas.
ప్రార్థన
తమీశ్వరాణాం పరమం మహేశ్వరం తం దేవతానాం పరమం చ దైవతమ్‌।
పతిం పతీనాం పరమం పరస్తాత్‌ విదామ దేవం భువనేశమీడ్యమ్‌॥
tamīśvarāṇāṁ paramaṁ maheśvaraṁ taṁ devatānāṁ paramaṁ ca daivataṁ.
patiṁ patīnāṁ paramaṁ parastāt vidāma devaṁ bhuvaneśamīḍyaṁ.
God of all gods, Supreme Master, Larger than the imperceptible unknown, owner of all Universes, Bless us today.
న తస్య కార్యం కరణం చ విద్యతే న తత్సమశ్చాభ్యధికశ్చ దృశ్యతే।
పరాస్య శక్తిర్వివిధైవ శ్రూయతే స్వాభావికీ జ్ఞానబలక్రియా చ॥
na tasya kāryaṁ karaṇaṁ ca vidyate na tat-samaś cābhyathikaś ca dṛśyate.
parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate svābhāvikī jñāna-bala-kriyā ca.
God of all Gods, Beyond Form, Beyond Action, Without Equal, Without Better, His Multi-potent Shakti, Bless us today.
న తస్య కశ్చిత్‌ పతిరస్తిలోకే న చేశితా నైవ చ తస్య లిఙ్గమ్।
స కారణం కరణాధి పాధిపో న చాస్య కశ్చి జ్జనితా న చాధిపః॥
na tasya kaścit patirastiloke na ceśitā naiva ca tasya lingaṁ
sa kāraṇaṁ karaṇādhi pādhipo na cāsya kaści jjanitā na cādhipaḥ
God of all gods, Beyond all powers, Beyond recognition, Self-strong, Without sign, Birthless, Limitless, Bless us today.
ఏష దేవో విశ్వకర్మా మహాత్మా సదా జనానాం హృదయే సన్నివిష్టః।
హృదా మనీషా మనసాభికౢప్తోఽయ ఏతద్విదు రమృతాస్తే భవన్తి॥
eṣa devo viśvakarmā mahātmā sadā janānāṁ hṛdaye sanniviṣṭaḥ.
hṛdā manīṣā manasābhiklṛpto ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavamti.
God of all gods, The Supreme Creator, That Mahatma, Reflected in all beings, understood only by ultimate Knowledge, That who lives in the heart, the mind, and in thought, To know Him is to become immortal, May that Divinity, Bless us today.
Chapter 2
పురోహితుని ప్రార్థన. Invocation by the priest.
ఓమ్ తత్ సత్.
నమో బ్రహ్మణే నమః సవిత్రయే
నమో విష్ణవే నమ శ్శ్రియే నమః
శివాయ నమః ఉమాయై నమః
ఓమ్ ప్రజాపతయే నమః
ōṁ tat sat.
namō brahmaṇē namaḥ savitrayē namaḥ viṣṇavē namaḥ
śrīyē namaḥ śivāya namaḥ umāyē namaḥ ōm prajāpatayē namaḥ
AUM
The Truth That Is. The Creator, The Preserver, The Destroyer.
We reverentially Salute Brahma the Creator, and his Shakti Savitri;
We reverentially Salute Vishnu the Preserver, and his Shakti Sree;
We reverentially Salute Siva the Destroyer, and his Shakti Uma;
We reverentially Salute, the Supreme God, Prajapati, Lord of all creatures.
నమ శ్శంభవే చ మయోభవే చ నమశ్శఙ్కరాయ చ
మయస్కరాయ చ నమః శివాయ చ శివతరాయ చ.
namaḥ śāmbhavāya ca mayobhavāya ca namaḥ śamkarāya ca
mayaskarāya ca namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca.
We salute goodness and prosperity. We salute fearlessness and well-being. We salute the pure and the purest.
అపవిత్రః పవిత్రో వా, సర్వావస్థాన్గతోపి వా।
యః స్మరేత్‌ పరమాత్మానం స బాహ్యాభ్యన్తరశ్శుచిః॥
apavitrah pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato api vā
yaḥ smaret paramātmānām sa bāhya abhyantara śuciḥ
Impure or pure, Whatever one’s nature, when one remembers the Ultimate Atman, inwardly and outwardly one becomes pure.
ఓమ్ భూర్భువః స్వః తత్సవితుర్వరేణ్యం
భర్గో దేవస్య ధీమహి ధియోయోనః ప్రచోదయాత్‌.
oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṁ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
Let us meditate on the radiance of Divinity; May that brilliance inspire and illuminate our minds.
Addressing the guests, the priest says
ఓమ్ క్రియమాణేస్మిన్ శుభవివాహ కర్మణి. oṃ kartayesmin śubhavivāha karmāṇi.
Bless this auspicious wedding ritual with these words.
ఓమ్ పుణ్యాహం భవన్తో బ్రువన్తు oṃ puṇyāham bhavanto bruvamtu
ఓమ్ ఋద్ధిం భవన్తో బ్రువన్తు oṃ ṛddham bhavanto bruvamtu
ఓమ్ స్వస్తి భవన్తో బ్రువన్తు oṃ svasti bhavanto bruvamtu
The priest asks the guests to respond after he recites:
ఓమ్ పుణ్యాహమస్తు oṃ puṇyāhamastu
ఓమ్ ఋద్ధిరస్తు oṃ ṛddhirastu
ఓమ్ స్వస్త్యస్తు oṃ svastyastu
The assembled guests respond:
ఓమ్ పుణ్యాహమస్తు, ఓమ్ ఋద్ధిరస్తు, ఓమ్ స్వస్త్యస్తు.
May all be holy. May all be successful. May all be well.
అయమారమ్భశ్శుభం భవతు. ayaṁ āraṃbhaḥ śubham bhavatu.
Bless this auspicious ceremony.
Chapter 3
కన్యాదానం: Bestowing the bride by the bride’s father.
The priest asks the father of the bride to recite after him.
కన్యాం కనకసమ్పన్నాం కనకాభరణ భూషితామ్।
దాస్యామి విష్ణవే తుభ్యం బ్రహ్మలోక జిగీషయా॥
kanyām kanakasampannāṁ kanakābharaṇa bhūṣitāṁ
dāsyāmi viṣṇave tubhyaṁ brahmaloka jigīṣayā
This gold-adorned daughter of mine, is bestowed to you.
విశ్వమ్భర స్సర్వభూతా స్సాక్షిణ్య స్సర్వదేవతాః
ఇమాం కన్యాం ప్రదాస్యామి పితౄణాం తారణాయవై॥
viśvambharaḥ sarvabhūtāḥ kanyām imāṁ
pradāsyāmi pitṝṇām tāraṇāyavai
For the eternal benefit of our forefathers, God and the Five Elements as witness I bestow this girl to you.
కన్యాం సాలంకృతాం సాధ్వీం సుశీలయా సుధీమతే।
ప్రయతోఽహమ్ ప్రయచ్ఛామి ధర్మ కామార్థ సిద్ధయే॥
kanyāṁ sālamkṛkṛtāṁ sādhvīṁ suśīlayā sudhīmate
prayatyohaṁ prayacchāmi dharma kāmārtha siddhaye
This well-adorned girl, is well-behaved and soft spoken. For the benefit of duty, love, and wealth.
Bestower says:
వృణీధ్వమ్. vṛṇīdhvam.
I bestow her to you.
Groom responds:
వృణీమహే. vṛṇīmahe.
I humbly accept.
(The above dialog is repeated three times.)
The priest asks the groom to recite after him:
స్వస్తి। దేవస్యత్వా సవితుః ప్రసవే।అశ్వినోర్బాహుభ్యామ్।
పూష్ణో హస్తాభ్యామ్ । ప్రతి గృహ్ణామి రాజాత్వా వరుణోనయతు దేవి దక్షిణే।
ప్రజాపతయే కన్యామ్। తేనామృతత్వమశ్యామ్‌ ।
వయోదాత్రే । మయో మహ్యమస్తు ప్రతిగృహీత్రే ।
aśvinorbāhubhyāṁ pūṣṇo hastābhyāṁ prati gṛhṇāmi
rājātvā varuṇonayatu devī dakṣiṇe prajāpateya
kanyāṁ tena amṛtatvaṁ aśyaṁ
vayodātre mayo mahyaṁ astu pratigṛhītve
In the name of all the protector gods I humbly take this woman.
Let the relationship between the bestower and me grow strong.
క ఇదం కస్మా అదాత్। కామః కామాయ।
కామోదాతా కామః ప్రతిగృహీతా।
కామగ్ం సముద్రమావిశ।కామేన త్వా ప్రతిగృహ్ణామి.
idaṁ kasmā ādāt kāmaḥ kāmāya
kāmodātā kāmaḥ pratigṛhītā
kāmagṁ samudramāviśa kāmena tvā pratigṛhṇāmi.
Cupid bestowed her; and the bestowed is also Cupid. With all the love I humbly take her.
Bestower says:
ధర్మేత్వయా ఏషా నాతిచరితవ్యా.
In your Duty to her, never transgress.
Groom responds:
నాతి చరామి.
I will not transgress.
Bestower says:
అర్థే త్వయా ఏషా నాతిచరితవ్యా.
In your pursuit of wealth, never transgress.
Groom responds:
నాతి చరామి.
I will not transgress.
Bestower says:
కామే త్వయా ఏషా నాతిచరితవ్యా.
In love to her, never transgress.
Groom responds:
నాతిచరామి.
I will not transgress.
Chapter4
పాణి గ్రహణం: Accepting the hand in matrimony.
Priest will recite the following and the groom to echo ‘mama’.
(Several redundant prayer verses in vogue were dropped out.)
యశ్శివో నామరూపాభ్యాం యాదేవీ సర్వమన్గళా
తయోః సంస్మరణాత్‌ పుంసాం సర్వతో జయమన్గళమ్‌।
సర్వమఙ్గళ మాఙ్గళ్యే శివే సర్వార్థసాధికే
శరణ్యే త్ర్యమ్‍బికే దేవి నారాయణి నమోస్తుతే
నమస్సర్వేభ్యో మహాజనేభ్యో నమః
అయమ్ ముహూర్తస్సుముహూర్తోఽస్తు.
yaśśivo nāmarūpābhyāṁ yādevī sarvamamgaḷā
tayoḥ samsmaraṇāt pumsāṁ sarvato jayamamgaḷaṁ
sarvamamgaḷa māmgaḷye śive sarvārthasādhike
śaraṇye tryambike devi nārāyaṇi namostute.
namassarvebhyo mahājanebhya namaḥ
ayam muhūrtassumuhortastu.
Priest recites the following with almanac information filled in paranthesis that gives the coordinates of the wedding venue, and also the genealogy of the groom.
ఆద్య బ్రహ్మణః ద్వితీయ పరార్ధే శ్వేత వరాహ కల్పే వైవస్వత మన్వన్తరే కలి యుగే ప్రథమ పాదే అమెరికా ద్వీపే ఉత్తర అమెరికా ఖన్డే ( ); నదీ మధ్య దేశే ( ); శోభనగృహే సమస్త దేవతా విద్యాధిక సన్నిధౌ, అస్మిన్ వర్తమాన వ్యావహారిక చాన్ద్రమానేన స్వస్తిశ్రీ ( ) సంవత్సరే ఉత్తరాయణే,
( ) ఋతౌ; ( ) మాసే; ( పక్షే); శుభ తిథౌ; ( ) వాసరే ( ) శుభనక్షత్రే శుభయోగే శుభకరణే ఏవం గుణ విశిష్టాయాం శుభతిథే
శ్రీమాన్‌ ( ) గోత్రః నామధేయోఽహమ్‌ శ్రీమతః ( ) గోత్రస్య ( ) నామధేయస్య ధర్మపత్నీసమేతః మమోపాత్త దురితక్షయ ద్వారా శ్రీ పరమేశ్వర ప్రీత్యర్థమ్
(మమ) ఆయుష్యాభివృద్ధ్యర్థమ్ ఆచన్ద్రార్కమనేక వైశేషిక సుఖానుభవ సిద్ధ్యర్థం పాణిగ్రహణాఖ్యం కర్మ కరిష్యే.
ādya brahmaṇaḥ dvitīya parārthe śveta varāha kalpe vaivasvata manvaṃtare kali yuge phrathama pāde amĕrikā dvīpe uttara amĕrikā khaṃḍe ( ); nadī madhya deśe ( ); śobhanagṛhe samasta devatā vidyādhika sannidhau, asmin vartamāna vyāvahārika cāndramānena svastiśrī ( ) samvatsare uttarāyaṇe,
( ) ṛtau; ( ) māse; ( pakṣe); śubha tithau; ( ) vāsare ( ) śubhanakṣatre śubhayoge śubhakaraṇe viśiṣṭāyām śubhatithe
śrīmān ( ) gotrasya nāmadheyoham śrīmataḥ ( ) gotrasya ( ) nāmadheyasya mamopātta duritakṣaya dvārā śrī parameśvara prītyartham
(mama) āyuṣyābhi vṛdhyartham ācandrārkamaneka vaiśeṣika sukhānubhava sidhyardham pāṇigrahaṇākhyam karma kariṣye.
అనుహవ మంత్రం: Mantra to avoid the disturbing unwanted noises.
అనుహవం పరిహవం పరీవాదం పరిక్షపమ్| దుస్స్వప్నం దురిదితం తద్ద్విషద్భ్యో దిశామ్యహమ్।
అనుహూతం పరిహూతం శకునేర్యదశాకునమ్| మృగస్య స్రుత మక్ష్ణయా తద్ద్విషద్భ్యో దిశామ్యహమ్॥
anūhavaṁ parihavaṁ parīvādaṁ paripakṣaṁ dussvapnaṁ duriditaṁ adviṣadbhyo diśāmyaham.
anuhūtaṁ parihūtaṁ śakuneryadaśākunaṁ mṛgasyasruta makṣṇa yā tadviṣadbhyo diśāmyaham.
Calling from behind, getting disturbed by noises from around, bad dreams, accusations, coughs, sneezes, weeping, etc., are bad omens. Let not they spoil this solemn occasion.
Groom recites:
గృభ్ణామి తే సుప్రజాస్త్వాయ హస్తం మయా పత్యా జరదష్టిర్యథా సహ।
భగో ఆర్యమా సవితా పురన్ధిర్మహ్యం త్వా దుర్గార్హపత్యాయ దేవాః॥
gṛhṇāmi te suprajāstvāya hastaṁ mayā patyā jaradaṣṭiryathā saha
bhago āryamā savitā puramdhrirmahaṁ tvā durgārhapatyāya devāḥ
I hold your hand in marriage happily,
I am your husband; Let us grow old together happily.
As beloved, as friend, as guide, be with me.
With divine grace assisting, let us together build an ideal home.
Bride responds:
యదేతత్ హృదయం తవ, తదస్తు హృదయం మమ।
యద్ ఇదమ్ హృదయం మమ, తదస్తు హృదయం తవ॥
yadetat hṛdayaṁ tava, tadastu hṛdayaṁ mama;
yad idam hṛdayaṁ mama, tadastu hṛdayaṁ tava.
What is in my heart, may it be in your heart; What is in your heart, may it be in my heart.
Groom says:
సఖా సప్తపదా భవ సఖాయౌ సప్తపదా బభూవ సఖ్యం తే గమేయగ్ం సఖ్యాత్తే మా యోషగ్ం సఖ్యాన్మే మా యోష్ఠా స్సమయావ సంకల్పావహై
సంప్రియౌ రోచిష్ణూ సుమనస్యమానౌ, పశ్యేమ శరదశ్శతం, జీవేమ శరదశ్శతం,
నన్దామ శరదశ్శతం, మోదామ శరదశ్శతం, భవామ శరదశ్శతం, శ్రుణునామ శరదశ్శతమ్ ॥
saṁ priyaṁ rociṣṇu sumanasyamānau, pasyema śaradaśśataṁ, jīvema śaradaśśataṁ
nandāma śaradaśśataṁ, modāma śaradaśśataṁ, bhavāma śaradaśśataṁ, śruṇunāma śaradaśśataṁ.
In mutual love, in mutual good, in mutual joy – May we see a hundred autumns; May we live a hundred autumns; May we enjoy a hundred autumns; May we have riches for a hundred autumns; May we hear good words a hundred years.
Bride responds:
ఆపశ్యం త్వా మనసా చేకితానాం తపసో జాతం తపసో విభూతమ్।
ఇహ ప్రజామిహరయిగ్ం రరాణః ప్రజాయస్వ ప్రజయా పుత్రకామ॥
āpaśyaṁ tvā manasā cekitānāṁ tapaso jātam tapaso vibhūtaṁ
iha prajāmi harayiṁ rarāṇaḥ prajāyasva prajayā putrakāma.
I am taking your hand in the belief – That you shall understand me; That you are cultured and honorable; And we both shall spend our lives together with our family happily.
Groom and Bride together recite:
సమంజన్తు విశ్వే దేవాస్స మాపో హృదయానినౌ।
సం మాతరిశ్వా సంధాతా సముదేష్ట్రీ దిదేష్టు నౌ॥
samanjantu viśve devāssa māpo hṛdayāninau;
saṁ mātariśvā samdhātā samudeṣṭri dideṣṭu nau.
May the divine powers of the universe anoint us. May the holy waters unite our hearts. May the Breath of Divinity, may the World-Maker, may the Moral Guide of all unite us.
మమ వ్రతే తే హృదయం ద ధామి మమ చిత్తం అనుచిత్తం తే అస్తు।
మమ వాచం ఏక మనాజుషస్వ బృహస్పతిష్ట్వ నియునక్తు మహ్యమ్॥
mama vrate te hṛdayaṁ da dhāmi mama cittaṁ anucittaṁ te astu
mama vācaṁ eka manājuṣasva bṛhaspatiṣṭva niyūnaktumahyaṁ
Your heart and my will – May they be one.
Your mind and my mind – May they be one.
May our words delight each other
May the Divinity unite us both.
Groom to the guests:
సుమన్గళీ రియం వధూ రిమాగ్ం సమేత పశ్యత
సౌభగ్య మస్యై దత్వా యాథాస్తం విపరేతన.
sumamgaḷī riyam vadhū rimāgaṁ sameta paśyuta
saubhagya masyai datvā yathāstaṁ viparetana.
Please come, see, and bless my wife to live hundred autumns before you go home.
Chapter 5
మంగళసూత్రధారణం: Tying the sacred knot.
Groom recites:
ఆశాసానా సౌమనసం ప్రజాం సౌభాగ్యం తనుమ్।
అగ్నేరనువ్రతా భూత్వా సంనహ్యే సుకృతాయకమ్।
మాన్గల్యమ్ తంతునాఽనేన మమ జీవన హేతునా।
కణ్ఠే బధ్నామి సుభగే త్వం జీవ శరదశ్శతమ్॥
āśāsānā saumanasaṁ prajāṁ saubhāgyaṁ tanum
agneranuvratā bhūtvāṁ sannahye sukṛtāyakaṁ.
māngalyaṁ tamtunā nena mama jīvana hetunā
kanṭhe badhnāmi subhage tvaṁ jīva śaradaśśataṁ.
With good heart and mind, be my partner and join me to perform good deeds.
This sacred thread is the reason for my life.
I am tying this around your neck and may you live hundred years.
Chapter 6
సప్తపది: The Seven Steps.
[Usually a small sacred fire pit is built. Both bride and groom take one step at a time around the fire. They recite the following together. In the absence of a fire pit, make seven circles with white rice. The bride holds the groom’s hand, puts her right foot in each of the circles as they both recite one vow after the other.]
- ఏషా ఏకపదీ భవ. īṣā ekapadī bhava.
We take the first step for nourishment.
- ఊర్జే ద్విపదీ భవ. ūrje dvipadī bhava.
We take the second step for success.
- వ్రతాయ త్రిపదీ భవ. vratāya tripadī bhava.
We take the third step for loyalty.
- మాయోభవాయ చతుష్పదీ భవ. mayobhavāya catuṣpadī bhava.
We take the fourth step for the Source of Bliss.
- పశుభ్యోః పంచపదీ భవ. paśubhyoh pancapadī bhava.
We take the fifth step for the good of all creatures.
- ఋతుభ్యః షట్పదీ భవ. ṛtubhyah ṣaṭpadī bhava.
We take the sixth step for the six seasons.
- హోత్రాభ్యః సప్తపదీ భవ. hotrebhyo saptapadī bhava.
We take the seventh step to be sacredly illuminated.
Now, they face each other and recite together:
సఖా సప్తపదా భవ సఖ్యం తే గమేయమ్।
సఖ్యం తే మాయోషగ్ం సఖ్యం తే మాయోష్టాః॥
sakhā saptapadā bhava sakhyaṁ te gameyaṁ
sakhyaṁ te māyoṣaḥ sakhyaṁ te māyoṣṭāḥ
With these seven steps you have become my friend.
May I deserve your friendship.
May my friendship make me one with you.
May your friendship make you one with me.
శాంతి పాఠం: Peace Invocation
ఓమ్ సహనా వవతు సహనౌ భునక్తు సహవీర్యం కరవావహై
తేజస్వినావ ధీతమస్తు మా విద్విషావహై॥
ఓమ్ శాన్తిశ్శాన్తిశ్శాన్తిః
oṃ sahanā vavatu sahanau bhunaktu sahavīryaṁ karavāvahai
tejasvināva dhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai.
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
May we both be protected together
May we both nourish together
May we both generate energy together
Let there be no animosity between us
Let there be Peace, Peace, Peace.
Chapter 7
ఆశీర్వచనం: Final blessing.
కర్మ-ఫలమ్ ఏతద్ వివాహస్య బ్రహ్మా – పూర్ణమ్ అస్తు.
karma-phalam etad vivāhasya brahmā – pūrṇam astu.
ఓమ్ శాన్తిశ్శాన్తిశ్శాన్తిః
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
May the fruits of this sacred wedding ceremony be blessed with the grace of God. Peace be with us.
[The following two rituals are observed according to local traditions.]
- మంగళహారతి: Prayer song blessing the bride and the groom by the women guests.
- అక్షతలు: Blessing the bride and groom with turmeric rice – all elderly guests.
