This is in continuation of my noting of the 18th.
Emile Zola’s novel I have referred to is L’assommoir (The Dram Shop–a shop selling cheap liquor distilled on the premises), which is full of street language using a large number of “obscure” slang words and curses. It portrays the wretched life of a poor laundress, Gervaise.
In his preface, the writer says, “When it was serialized in a newspaper, it was attacked and denounced with unprecedented ferocity…I wanted to depict the inexorable downfall of a working-class family in the poisonous atmosphere of our industrial suburbs…(It is) about the common people that does not lie and that smells of the common people.”
This novel is part of Zola’s 20-novel Roughon-Macquart series.
For no real reason, Virginie, a prostitute and Gervaise fight with each other in a washhouse, exchanging swear words, with the onlookers enjyoing the “spectacle” and ogling at the naked bodies of the two women, who tear each others dresses including the inner clothing. The fight and bad mouthing each other are elaborately dealt with.
The Telugu story seems to have been written under the influence of that great novel in general and the fight in particular.
Chavali Bangaramma, as you have said did not get the recognition she deserved during her time, and probably even later! But, there were quite a few poets, particularly women poets who were “ignored.”
I would like to share the following information with the eemaata readers.
Velcheru Narayana Rao of University of Wisconsin (currently visiting professor at Emory University, Atlanta) edited and translated a collection of one hundred telugu poems of the 20th century. The collection bears the title, “Hibiscus on the Lake.” It is published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2003. I need not emphasize the very title for the book chosen by Narayana Rao. You could guess it!
If you haven’t already read , I would request you to read “A Historical After-Essay” at the end of the book . A lengthy critical appreciation of Chavali Bangaramma’s poetry appears in the essay, and in particular on the poem neeDa translated as Hibiscus on the Lake.
వ్యాసం చాలా బాగుంది. అసలు పెసరట్టు వేయాలనే సంకల్పమే ఒక గొప్ప అనుభూతినిస్తుంది. ఇక పిండి రుబ్బి, వేసి, తినడం అంటారా. అబ్బో, చెప్పనే అక్కర్లేదు. ఇది నా స్వానుభవం. అయ్యా వెంకటేశ్వరరావు గారూ! మరి “ఆంధ్రమాత” గురించిన వ్యాసంతో మాకెప్పుడు విందు చేస్తారు? నాకు తెలిసి ఆంధ్రులే చెయ్యగల ఇంకొక వంటకం “చిట్టింటపొట్టు కూర”.

మీరు రాసిన ఈ కథ, కథ మధ్యలో వ్రాసిన కవితలు కూడా చాల అర్థవంతంగా ఉన్నాయి. ఇప్పుడు ఉన్నా పరిస్థితులకు చాల దగ్గరగా ఈ కథ ఉంది. ఆ కథ వ్రాసిన తీరు హృదయాన్ని హత్తుకునే విధముగా ఉంది. మీరు ఇలాంటి కథలు ఇంకెన్నో వ్రాయాలని కోరుకుంటూ,
మీరు సాహిత్యరంగం లోపలి వారు కారు గనక, మీకు “వైతాళికులు” పుస్తకం లోని కవయిత్రులని గురించి తెలియదన్నారు. బైరాగి గురించి ఎలా మాట్లాడ గలిగేరో..రేవతీదేవి గురించి ఎలా మాట్లాడ గలిగేరో….అలాగే వైతాళికులు లోని కవయిత్రులని గురించి కూడా మీరు మాట్లాడగలరు. చైతన్యం కల్గిన పాఠకులు గనక. కాకుంటే అలా మాట్లాడాలని అనుకోవాలి ముందు.
చాలా మందికి చావలి బంగారమ్మ గారి పేరు పరిచయం కాక పోయినా..ఆమె రాసిన బహు చక్కని కవిత్వం తెలియక పోయినా…అది సాహిత్య విమర్శకుల పొరపాటే !! దేవులపల్లి వెంకట క్రిష్ణశాస్త్రి గారి తో సరిసమానమైన ధీటైన గేయాలు రాసినవారు బంగారమ్మ గారు…”వైతాళికులు” లో!! మరి ఎంతమందికి ఆవిడ రాసిన గేయాలతో పరిచయం ఉందివాళ?? ఆమె కవితల విడి సంపుటి గురించిన ఊసైనా ఎవరికి తెలుసు?? వాటిలోని అందాలని విశ్లేషించిన వారేరీ?? పురుషుల చేతి లో ఒక అస్త్రంగా పనిచేసిన “విమర్శ” ఇలా ఎందరి స్త్రీల అద్భుత కల్పనా ప్రపంచాలని చిన్న చూపు చూసిందో తెలిసినప్పుడు కదా..విమర్శనా రంగం..ఎంత సంకుచితత్వం తో ప్రవర్తించిందీ స్పష్టపడేదీ??
మంచి కల్పనని దర్శించవచ్చు…అందుకు మన మనసు కిటికీలు తెరుచుకోవాలి …ఏ భేద భావమూ అడ్డురాకుండా !!

మొట్టమొదటగా ఈ సాహిత్యపత్రికని నడుపుతున్న వారందరికీ నా కృతజ్ఞతలు. ఇది సాహిత్య పత్రిక కబట్టి కుదిరినంత వరకు అన్ని మాటలు తెలుగులో ప్రచురిస్తే బాగుంటుందని నా ఉద్దేశం. ఉదాహరణకు : –
Hospital = వైద్యశాల
Pants = బారు నిక్కరు
పైన చెప్పిన విధంగా నాలాగ సాహిత్య అభిలాష ఉన్నవారు అన్ని మాటలు తెలుగులో ఉంటే తెలుసుకోవాలని లేక నేర్చుకోవాలని అనుకుంటారు కదా.

A very long time ago I read a novel by Emile Zola in which two poor women fight over (empty bottles?) a truffle and tear off each other’s clothes. I have forgotten its name. “Smile” may have been inspired by that novel. I have not come across any reader who has pointed it out.
ఈ శ్రు అనే విషయంలో చాలా ఏళ్ళ క్రితం నేను చేసిన పొరబాటును గురించి ఈమాట సంపాదకులకు ఎప్పుడో చెప్పాను కాని వారింకా నా పాత వ్యాసం శీర్షికను సరిదిద్దలేదు.
