I loved the March 2020 part. It is a story that needs to be told. Probably from many perspectives. By many people. This one I like. I welcome many others.
I see two different aspects of the philosophical issue: one is what happens when truth becomes relative. In the west, the reliance on historical narrative for establishing truth is challenged starting in the 70s. That led to many progressive movements. In the last decade that same argument is trotted out by right wing people in the US, and started challenging institutions created since enlightenment: press, education, logic, humanism etc. In their view NYTimes is as much as an authority as a blog. [They show NYT mistakes or biases as a way of justification]. The concept of truth itself is challenged. In fact, it was enshrined as belief is more important than truth. [There was a government memo to that effect three years back].
The other aspect is way rules are formed. Society went through swings historically: social enforcement of rules vs government enforcement of rules. We traded tradition driven laws for constitution, for good reason: it is more inline with the current demands and it can be changed to reflect the times through a well-honed method. Now, the government rules are lagging in keeping up. That left a void where social enforcement of rules has become the norm. On the progressive side, the excessives have driven even innocent bystanders out of the public sphere and more. On the traditional side, the excessives have resurrected the age-old prejudices unapologetically.
Incidentally, I noticed what you did there with the gender neutral pronouns there. Kind of tough in any language.

నిన్ననే మొట్టమొదటిసారి మెక్బెత్ చదినాను. అది కూడా వచన రూపంలో. అది కూడా పిల్లల కొరకు రాసిన క్లుప్త రూపంలో. మూలం చదవాలన్న కుతూహలంతో అంతర్జాలంలో వెతికి మొదలుపెట్టేను. కాని భాష, భావం రెండూ అర్థం కాలేదు. ఇంతలో, ఈ రోజు, కాకతాళీయంగా ఈ వ్యాసం నా కళ్ళపడింది. దీనిని ఆసరాగా తీసుకుని మెక్బెత్ మూలం మరొకసారి చదువుతాను. రచయితకి ధన్యవాదాలు. పేరడైజ్ లాస్ట్ కూడా మరొకసారి చదవాలేమో! చూద్దాం.

Dazzled by the scholarship exhibited in this essay by the essayist, సూరపరాజు రాధాకృష్ణమూర్తి, (Suraparaju Radhakrishna Moorthy) – I opened my printed editions of Eliot’s poetry and read this poem Gerontion.
The first sentence I jotted down after my reading was: This Telugu essay suffers from over amplification and over reading of an English poem.
Gerontion – is a poem which is much rehauled and given a new look, like the real estate in S.W. Florida. Refurbishing gets done every few years.
Let us face it – what is it that is not changed in this poem Gerontion, even to begin with, by the eminent editor? The heading, the epigraph, the placement of poem – once a prelude, then an afterword and now an independent short poem. The wordings inside the poem changed too. (James Longenbach mentions Eliot’s notebooks show the word ‘Nature’ instead of word “History.” To me, that one word substitution will bring a major change in interpretation of a sizeable part of poem.)
Even after my current readings, I still limit this poem’s themes to post-war jitters and shaken up religious faiths and calendar events. I don’t think sex is a theme. There is no need to drag in Indian epic iconic figures of any kind into this essay on Gerontion. The inn in the poem is as in Balzac’s Old Man Goriot. There are caretakers, and tenants. The woman in the poem comes across as the inn keeper’s wife. Not the wife of Gerontion. Etc. etc.
I then went on to read some more of Eliot’s poetry. Read a few English professors’ views on Eliot, including professor Kalivi Visvanatham from Andhra University. Some men are totally enamored by Eliot. For some, if poet Sarojini Naidu, says same word in her poem three times– it is a defect. Whereas if Eliot, does it – it is “Anaphora.” Jane Austin is so limited in her scope, she is just a drawing room writer, whereas James even if he is all parasols and pretty girls is the king of prose. So on and so forth. Naturally in their mind, if Eliot is vague as hell, these are “many allusions” of a master poet. :-))
I still stand by my initial impression “This Telugu essay suffers from over amplification and over reading of an English poem.” But I was silent.
However, as I now read Paul Strathern’s ‘Sartre in 90 minutes’, I am charmed by this remark of Sartre’s philosophy teacher – “Excessive elaboration of insufficiently clarified ideas.”
How can I not like that wording which is so much better than mine? Simply, In the joy of reading that remark, I am sending this opinion over.
