It is possible (based on internal evidence in the Rāmāyaṇa, and also based on references to it in other literature) to say that the oldest Rāmāyaṇa of Valmiki was composed in the 4th century BCE, possibly in the lifetime of the grammarian Pāṇini. Kauṭilya (Cāṇakya / Viśṇugupta) refers to it briefly in his Arthaśāstra ( written around 300 BCE). The Rāmāyaṇa was however expanded more and more in the following few centuries until it stabilized sometime in the 4th or 5th century CE.”
