శ్రీనివాసరావు గారి అభిప్రాయమే అచ్చు గుద్దినట్టు నాదీనూ. అన్ని వ్యాసాలూ చదవలేకపోయానే అని బాధపడిపోతూ పాత సంచికలన్నీ తిరగేద్దామనుకునేంతలోనే, భోజనం ఆఖర్న పెరుగన్నం, మాగాయ (ఊరగాయ) లాంటి కమ్మటి మాట చెప్పారు అన్వర్. జూలై వరకూ ఆ పుస్తకం కోసం ఎదురు చూడ్డం పెద్ద కష్టమేమీ కాదు, అన్వర్ కష్టం, ఇష్టంతో పోల్చుకుంటే.

ఈ అధ్యాపకుని (సూరపరాజు రాధాకృష్ణమూర్తి) లెక్చర్ హాల్లో కూర్చుని సాహిత్యం గురించి వినటం ఎంతైనా బాగుంటున్నది.
In the matter of Teiresias, Radhakrishnamurthy Suraparaju, quoted T.S. Eliot himself, that he considered Teiresias as the overall storyteller in the Wasteland poetry.
T.S Eliot, came to know Teiresias (because of his school curriculum), thru Dante, Sophocles, Euripides, Ovid, Tennyson. (Like his contemporaries – Yeats, Russell, Virginia Wolf, Poulenc, Thomas Mann etc., couple of Nobel prize winners, the others, celebrities in their own right.)
I got to Teiresias more thru a movie called ‘Match Point,’ a Woody Allen creation. In that movie, a quote from Sophocles, is used in a bizarre, disturbing scene. The quote haunted me, and eventually led to my reading Sophocles 1- (Gren and Lattimore editors)- Oedipus the king, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone. That is where I met the blind stubborn crochety Teiresias. He is quite a character.
Teiresias is not a talker. It took eight pages of questioning by Oedipus the king, to drag a wee bit of information out of him. He really hates revealing anyone’s past or future. Teiresias already knows he will be in big trouble whenever he reveals any truth. Previously, for telling the top two Gods of Greek mythology -that a man gets very minimal pleasure when compared to a woman, during sexual act, he is cursed to be blind. Zeus compensated him later by giving him prophetic insights. Big benediction! Comes across as another curse to me.
(What good is it being a clairvoyant anyway? Technically, a seer cannot stop or change anything he predicts. If he can, then he is no longer a truth sayer.)
What T.S. Eliot perhaps meant in ‘his notes’ is: Teiresias of myth, because he lived as a man for a few years and as a woman for a few years, (even had pregnancies and bore children, lucky ducky,) thru different centuries under different rulers, can understand men and women, of any times. He is super qualified to narrate stories in Wasteland. True. True. But the way I see him, he would not be interested in that job. Tiresias can only be one of Eliot’s thousands of allusions.
T.S. Eliot – in his fragmented, disjointed Wasteland poetry, he is mostly mimicking Prince Hamlet -his part pretense looniness, part real mental anguish, piecemeal talking. I think that’s what he is doing. When he wrote wasteland, Eliot is in the same rut as Hamlet.
పైన లైలా గారి వ్యాఖ్య ఈ కథ మీద కాక నేను అంతకుముందు ఈమాటలో రెండు వేర్వేరు కథల మీద వేర్వేరు సమయాల్లో వెలిబుచ్చిన అభిప్రాయాల మీద. ఆ అభిప్రాయాలని అనుసరించి నాకు వివక్షత ఉన్నదన్న ఆమె ఆరోపణ. “ప్రతీక” కథ నాకు అర్థమే కాలేదన్న ఆవేదన. ఎవరన్నా “మైసూర్ పాక్” నచ్చిందంటే, కాకరకాయ కూర ఎందుకు నచ్చలేదని నిలదీస్తారా? ఒకవేళ ఆమె భావించినట్టుగానే కథ అర్థం కాకపోతే అది పాఠకుడి తప్పా రచయిత్రి తప్పా? ఒక కథ నచ్చినా నచ్చకపోయినా అందులో పాఠకుడికి నచ్చని అంశాలని వేలెత్తిచూపకూడదా?
ఆమె అభిప్రాయంలోని చివరి వాక్యంలో మాత్రం ఈ కథలో పేర్కొన్న కోవిడ్ టెస్ట్ ప్రసక్తి వచ్చింది! కానీ, ప్రెగ్నెన్సీ టెస్ట్ పోలిక నన్ను తలకాయ గోక్కొనేలా చేసింది – కోవిడ్ టెస్ట్ అందరికీ చేస్తారు గానీ, ప్రెగ్నెన్సీ టెస్ట్ మగవాళ్లకి చెయ్యరు గదా?
పై ప్రశ్నలని పక్కన పెడితే (ఎవరి అభిప్రాయాలు వారివి), ఆమె వ్యాఖ్యని ఈమాట ప్రచురించింది కనుక అది “ఆక్సిజన్ మాస్క్” కథ మీద అని మీకు ఎలా అనిపించి ప్రచురించారో వివరించగలరా? నాకు అర్థం కాక ఆడుగుతున్నాను.
తిరగేస్తుంటే “పదేళ్ల” పనిపిల్ల టీ పట్టుకువచ్చింది రెండు కప్పుల్లో…. “అవును, చెరి ఆరు టీలు. అక్కడ పనిచేసే కుర్రాడిని చూచి దిగులు పడి పోయావు చదువుకోకుండా పనిచేస్తున్నాడని. అలాంటి వాళ్ళకోసం ఏదన్నా చేయాలని ఆ తర్వాత తరచూ అనేదానివి. I did not understand why she employed underaged children as labor.

కథ అనువాదం బావుంది. ఒక్కచోట మాత్రం కొంచెం ఇబ్బంది పడ్డాను. జాడ్యం అనే పదం నెగెటివ్ గా ఉపయోగించే పదం. కథ సందర్భంలో జబ్బే సరైన పదం.
