On an unrelated note, western educated readers caught on to the wave of minimalism since 1940’s. The trend started with Hemingway — (Recall how Fidgerald’s style — elaborate, ornate, beautiful, sumptuous and then see austere, severe, sparse, cut-glass style Hemingway). By the time of 60’s, it has become an entrenched style, popularized by the likes of Tobias Wolff, Raymond Carver etc. A generation thus grew up learning the essential writing in that tradition, naturally has the same impact on their children and us immigrants.
Contrast this situation with AP: The old books, which stretched the story with elaborate descriptions, begat similar style in the beginning of the century. Saakshi like essays, while appealing to us, are exercise in excessive rhetoric. A satire thus became a main stream. Viswanatha is as guilty, taking detours into needless cul-de-sacs in stories, rescuing the prose just in time with clumsy segue’s. The best of them, even Raa Vi Saa is guilty of the same. In fact, I contend that he never wrote prose — he only wrote poetry. His long shadow on the literature meant endless imitations of the style with baroque style degrading the story.
Of course, Koku is a lot better. While his style is clean and clear, he never resisted a chance to editorialize. Thankfully his editorials are short, and to the point. Looking back, I recall never being annoyed at his short sermons. (Even now, his story of immigrant laborour to Marathi mills is one of my favorite ones).
Of all the people, Chaso stands out as a capable story teller with mastery of craft. It was not uniform, as I recall. Still, whatever few he gave us in that tradition are worth discussing, dissecting and used as educational tools.

I was just listening to the Bade Ghulam Alikhan’s pahadi raga which you provided in the above links. And I could easily figure out one more song just from that ‘Galiki Kulamedi’ from Karna movie. Hope that is right. I totally agree with you on that this is one way we can slowly get attracted to classical music. This is exactly what happened to me. I started listening to Ghantasala songs and slowly got attracted to Carnatic and Hindustani music. Please continue to provide more information on the ragas. We appreciate that.
ఎప్పటిలానే మంచి వ్యాసం! శాస్త్రీయ సంగీతం పట్ల పెద్ద అవగాహన లేని రోజుల్లో ఈ రాగంతో తొలి పరిచయం: “Call of the Valley” ఆల్బమ్ ద్వారానే. సుమారుగా అదే కాలంలో కె.బి.కె మోహనరాజు గారు పాడిన “చూచే కొలది సుందరము” వినడం జరిగగింది. ఆ పాట విపరీతంగా నచ్చేసి ఈ రాగంలో పాటలంటే ఆసక్తి పెరిగింది. అప్పట్లో రేడియో ముందు టేప్రికార్డరు పెట్టి విజయవాడ స్టేషన్నుంచీ లలిత సంగీతం రికార్డు చేసుకునే వాడిని. ఒకరోజు సాలూరి-బాలసరస్వతుల “పొదరింటిలోనుండి పొంచి చూసేవు” అన్న పాట వినపడుతుంటే హడావిడిగా రికార్డింగు మొదలు పెట్టాను. సాలూరి పాటొచ్చిందంటే ఆ రోజుల్లో పెద్ద పండగే. ఆ పాటవగానే ఎవరో తెలియని వ్యక్తి కామెంటరీ, తరువాత CSR పాడిన “ఆగవే మరదలా” పాట (అప్పట్లో విరిగిపోయిన ఈ పాట రికార్దోకటి ఇంట్లో వుండేది, వినడానికి వీలులేకుండా! ఆ రికార్డు రెండో వైపు భానుమతి అమరగీతం “మదనా స్వాగతమోయి!” వుంటుంది.), ఆ వెంటనే “మాలపిల్ల”లో పాట. ఇంతలో ఈ పాట. కొత్తగా, ఎంతో హాయిగా. ఎవరిదీ గొంతు, ఎంత మంచి టేస్టు, ఎవరు ఈ కార్యక్రమం సమర్పిస్తున్నది అని ప్రశ్నలు. ఈ పాటతో ఆ కార్యక్రమం పూర్తయినట్లు గుర్తు. ఇది జరిగిన కొద్ది రోజులకి మళ్ళీ ఆ టేపు పెట్టుకుని విందామనుకుంటే కొంత పాట లేదు. ఏమంటే పొరపాటున మా చెల్లెలు చెరిపేసిందని తేలింది. అప్పటినుండి వందల మందిని అడిగుంటాను ఆ కార్యక్రమం విన్నారా, లేక ఆ పాట పాడిందెవరో తెలుసా అని. పదేళ్ళ క్రితం ఒకాయన “ఘంటసాల” లిస్టులో ప్రస్తావిస్తే ఎగిరి గంతేశాను. కానీ ఆయన దగ్గరకూడా పూర్తి ఆడియో దొరకలేదు. ఆ ఉన్న 2 నిమిషాల రికార్డింగే మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ వింటూ తృప్తి పడుతుండగా మోహనరాజుగారి కుటుంబసభ్యుల సహృదయతతో ఒక రెండు నెలలుగా పూర్తి పాట మంచి క్వాలిటీలో వినగలలుగుతున్నాను.

చాల చక్కగా ఉంది. ఇలాగే గ్రంధాలయం లోని మనుచరిత్ర కూడా కొంచెం కొంచెంగా వివరణ ఇస్తే చాలా బాగుంటుంది – ధన్యవాదాలతో – పర్వతాల రంగయ్య ,హుబ్లి ,కర్నాటక.
