శ్రీనివాస్ గారూ ! 1975 లో మళయాళ భాష లో ‘మా నిషాద ‘ అన్న ఒక చలన చిత్రం వచ్చింది. ఆ చిత్రారంభ గీతం (జేసుదాస్) ఆ గీత చిత్రీకరణా*రజని కి ప్రేరణ అయి ఉండవచ్చునా!

I loved all aspects of this recorded program. Top marks for the choice of the theme, for the narration and enunciation, the imaginative instrumental orchestration and choral music. Beautiful.
Who is the woman narrator? She has beautiful voice and did a great job.
In the story told here- Is it Valmiki who burnt the hunter into ashes? The narrator leaves it vague and says – “According to legends the hunter is reduced to ashes.” This should have been edited out. It just does not make any sense that Valmiki weeps over a bird and then turns around and kills a human being.
Valmiki is not getting pious and left winged like some of recent Telugu poets do. They liberally weep over plants and animals and proceed to depict man to be worse in behavior than other animals. Or magnanimously assign him the position of being in charge of protecting one creature or the other. Since when has God put man in charge of Mother Nature and Planets? Man after all is an animal. It is so pompous and anti -Darwin to think man as the protector or destroyer of plant or animal kingdom. The hunter is just getting his food, like the bird gets the worm and the worm gets its feed. Valmiki is responding to the suddenness of an incident that occurred before his eyes. The death of a bird while mating and the shrieks of a female bird are heart wrenching. Valmiki’s is an instinctive primal response.
As a society, for centuries India had lost its sanity and turned a deaf ear to the sexual urges of females in their prime, when they lost their husbands. The women are even thrown into fire when their husbands died. Over years, when the society thought it is too cruel, it reduced the punishment, settled down to mutilating the women, calling them by special names. So much for human societies and group thinking. Well, I am glad that stupidity is over. The present men and women are cognizant of their individual needs, and managing their lives better.
In Valmiki Ramayana, the sage Valmiki is very concerned with his utterance of a curse on the archer. That he wished ill on the archer, troubled Valmiki, just as much as the bird’s death troubled him. When Brahma comes down to earth to see Valmiki, the rishi mentions his misdeed to Brahma and Brahma absolves him of his guilt. Brahma tells him to take credit only for creation of the poem, (“four metrical feet each containing of equal letters (viz 8,) and possessing the rhythm of a song that can be sung to a lute.”) Valmiki does not get into discussion with Brahma, the creator, about the rights and wrongs, in his creation.
Try as one may as Milton, – There is no way to justify God’s ways to Men.
Rajani is mentioned as producer of this beautiful artistic work. Hope someone obtains the rights, to facilitate this work to be heard in present day music halls of great acoustics, full size orchestras, and chorus. And a great conductor.
(I appreciated in another interview, Rajani saying, being in charge of a work place in administrative capacity is no different than a music conductor’s work. Very nice analogy. No orchestra can make good music without a good conductor. Listeners of this program! If you have rejoiced in Rajani, please listen to Leonard Bernstein’s young people concerts. He is one of a kind teacher. Listen to him on subjects of Melody, Harmony, Music intervals, Modes, orchestra, Beethoven, etc. Who can explain and demonstrate to us music better than Leonard Bernstein, who had a big orchestra in his hands and a music hall as Carnegie at his disposal.)
This April at Carnegie Hall, I heard Philip Glass’s composition “The Passion of Ramakrishna” performed by Pacific symphony and Choir – conducted by Carl St. Claire. New Yorkers and World audiences loves Philip Glass. They cheered him wildly, when he came onto the stage. Glass, is into Buddhist philosophy I believe. He had also exchanged his musical knowledge in past with Ravi Shankar, collaborated with him in a few compositions. Mr. St. Clair is the longest tenured conductor of a major American Orchestra. Pacific symphony is the largest orchestra formed in the US in the last 50 years, and that is said to be due to largely Mr. St. Clair’s influence.
Perhaps musicians like them will be able to bring this work of Rajani and rest of the team to the world, in its fullest beauty. That is what Brahma wanted, isn’t it? Didn’t he say Ramayana will be heard in all three worlds, forever and ever?
కథ చాలా బాగుంది. గురుత్వాకర్షణ పన్ను భలే ఐడియా. బాధ్యత లేని ప్రభుత్వాలు పౌరులపై వేసే పన్నుల భారాలు ఇలానే ఉంటున్నాయి. నాకు కథలు చదివే అలవాటు లేదు. అయినా, ఈ కథ చివరిదాకా చదివించింది. పన్నుల గురించి ఒక రాజనీతిజ్ఞుడు పుట్టినప్పటి నుంచి చనిపోయేదాకా ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ రెండు రకాల పనులు చేస్తారని ఒక కొటేషన్ చదివా. ఒకటి పుట్టినప్పటి నుంచి “బతకడం” రెండు చనిపోయేదాకా “పన్ను” చెల్లించడం.
