RIT 3.0

Welcome to RIT 3.0. The major improvements in RIT 3.0 from RIT 2.0 are:

• For its output RIT 2.0 was using the Mukkavilli font. RIT 3.0 uses a lot more beautiful postscript font called 'Potana' developed by Dr. Desikachary.

• Most of the tex macros used by Mukkavilli were very fragile. It was difficult to use a lot of tex formatting facilities with their macros. In this version we have completely done away with Mukkavilli's fonts and macros. We have kept the tex programming to minimum. As a result the current macros are a lot more robust than Mukkavilli's.

We have tried our best to make the latex code as modular as possible so that it will be easy to port any postscript fonts we might find in future. If you have the enthusiasm to port any public domain or commercial postscript fonts into RIT please contact us. We will be happy to provide you any help. Right now, potana doesn't have bold face, and another decent font would be a great boost to RIT.

We are interested in extending RIT to other languages. We have partly hacked a Devnagari font into RIT. It will be great if somebody can put time into completing it.

If you are not successful in installing RIT, please post problems in SCIT. The burden of user support falls uniformly on the computer literate people on the net. We will be monitoring SCIT anyway and provide support to the extent our time permits.

Potana was a commercial font and Desikachary recently released it for public domain. We are grateful to TANA for its efforts in getting potana font into public domain. Special thanks are due to Dr.Jampala Chowdary for bringing potana to the attention of TANA and convincing Desikachary and TANA elders on the need for public domain fonts in Telugu. We are thankul to KV Rao for providing the disk space for RIT 3.0
