સૌંદર્યલહરિ ૮૧ - ૯૦
ગુરુત્વં વિસ્તારં ક્ષિતિધરપતિઃ પાર્વતિ નિજાત્
નિતંબાદાચ્છિદ્ય ત્વયિ હરણરૂપેણ નિદધે ,
અતસ્તે વિસ્તીર્ણો ગુરુરયમશેષાં વસુમતીં
નિતંબ પ્રાગ્ભારઃ સ્થગયતિ લઘુત્વં નયતિ ચ . ૮૧ .
ગુરુત્વં - heaviness
વિસ્તારં - vastness
ક્ષિતિ ધરપતિઃ - the lord of mountains (Himavaan, the father of Parvati)
પાર્વતિ - Oh Parvati! (daughter of the mountain) (Sakti)
નિજાત્ - from his own
નિતંબાત્ - flanks (of the mountain)
આચ્છિદ્ય - having cut
ત્વયિ - to you
હરણ રૂપેણ - in the form of a (wedding) gift
નિદધે - presented
અતઃ તે - therefore your
વિસ્તીર્ણઃ - vast
ગુરુઃ - heavy
અયં - this
અશેષાં - the entire
વસુમતીં - the earth
નિતંબ - the hips and loins
પ્રાગ્ભારઃ - mass behind
સ્થગયતિ - conceals
લઘુત્વં નયતિ ચ - and reduces to lightness
Oh Parvati! the lord of the mountains presented to you in the form of a (wedding) gift, heaviness and vastness having cut (them) from his own flanks. Therefore this your vast, heavy mass of the hips and loins behind conceals the entire earth and reduces (it) to lightness (in comparison).

કરીંદ્રાણાં શુંડાન્ કનકકદલી કાંડપટલીં
ઉભાભ્યામૂરુભ્યામુભયમપિ નિર્જિત્ય ભવતિ ,
સુવૃત્તાભ્યાં પત્યુઃ પ્રણતિ કઠિનાભ્યાં ગિરિસુતે
વિધિજ્ઞે જાનુભ્યાં વિબુધ કરિકુંભ દ્વયમસિ . ૮૨ .
કરીંદ્રણાં - of elephants
શુંડાન્ - trunks (of elephants)
કનક કદલી - golden plantain tree
કાંડ પટલીં - the stalk portion
ઉભાભ્યાં - both
ઊરુભ્યાં - by the thighs
ઉભયં અપિ - and both (the elephant trunks and the stalk of the golden plantain which are standards of comparison by poetic convention to a woman's thighs), and
નિર્જિત્ય - having vanquished
ભવતિ - Oh You! (Sakti)
સુવૃત્તાભ્યાં - well rounded
પત્યુઃ પ્રણતિ - from prostrations to the husband (Siva)
કઠિનાભ્યાં - which are hard
ગિરિ સુતે - Oh daughter of the mountain ! (Sakti)
વિધિજ્ઞે - Oh knower of Vedic injunction! (Sakti)
જાનુભ્યાં - by the two knees
વિબુધ કરિ - the elephant of Indra (named Airavata)
કુંભ - the frontal globe on the forehead of an elephant
દ્વયં - both
અસિ - you exist
Oh You! Oh daughter of the mountain! Oh knower of Vedic injunction! you exist having vanquished both : the trunks of elephants and the stalk portion of the golden plantain tree, by both thighs, (and) both frontal globes on the fore head of the elephant of Indra, by the two knees which are well rounded and hard from prostrations to the husband (Siva).

પરાજેતું રુદ્રં દ્વિગુણશરગર્ભૌ ગિરિસુતે
નિષંગૌ જંઘે તે વિષમવિશિખો બાઢમકૃત ,
યદગ્રે દૃશ્યંતે દશશરફલાઃ પાદયુગલી
નખાગ્રચ્છદ્માનઃ સુરમકુટ શાણૈક નિશિતાઃ . ૮૩ .

રુદ્રં - Rudra (Siva)
દ્વિગુણ - double (the usual number of five arrows of Cupid)
શર ગર્ભૌ - arrows within
ગિરિ સુતે - Oh daughter of the mountain! (Sakti)
નિષંગૌ - the quiver
જંઘે - the two shanks
તે - your
વિષમ વિશિખઃ - Cupid
બાઢં અકૃત - assuredly made
યત્ અગ્રે - in front of which (shanks)
દૃશ્યંતે - are seen
દશ શર ફલાઃ - the heads of ten arrows
પાદ યુગલી - of the pair of feet
નખ અગ્ર છદ્માનઃ - in the guise of nail tips
સુર મકુટ - the crowns of celestials
શાણૈક - whetstone
નિશિતાઃ - sharpened
Oh daughter of the mountain! to defeat Rudra, Cupid assuredly made your two shanks into a quiver with double (the usual number of) arrows within. In front of which are seen the heads of ten arrows in the guise of nail tips of the pair of feet, sharpened on the whetstones of the crowns of the celestials (bowing at your feet).

શ્રુતીનાં મૂર્ધાનો દધતિ તવ યૌ શેખરતયા
મમાપ્યેતૌ માતઃ શિરસિ દયયા ધેહિ ચરણૌ ,
યયોઃ પાદ્યં પાથઃ પશુપતિ જટાજૂટ તટિની
યયોર્લાક્ષા લક્ષ્મીરરુણ હરિચૂડામણિ રુચિઃ . ૮૪ .
શ્રુતીનાં - of the Vedas (that which was heard by revelation)
મૂર્ધાનઃ - the head (the Upanishads are the head of the Vedas as they ascertain the true meaning of the Vedas)
દધતિ - are borne
તવ યૌ - your (feet) which
શેખરતયા - as a diadem
મમ અપિ - on my too
એતૌ - these two
માતઃ - Oh Mother! (Sakti)
શિરસિ - on the head
દયયા ધેહિ - place with compassion
ચરણૌ - the two feet
યયોઃ પાદ્યં - the water used for washing which (the feet)
પાથઃ - water
પશુપતિ - Pasupati (Siva who bows at Sakti's feet)
જટા જૂટ તટિની - the river (Ganga) in the mass of the matted hair
યયોઃ - of which
લાક્ષા લક્ષ્મીઃ - the lustre of the lac (red) dye (used as a cosmetic on the feet)
અરુણ - red
હરિ ચૂડા મણિ - the gem on the diadem of Hari (who bows at Devi's feet)
રુચિઃ - colour
Oh Mother! these two feet which are borne by the Upanishads as a diadem, place (them) with compassion on my head too. The water used for washing which (the feet) is the Ganga in the mass of the matted hair of Pasupati, (and) the lustre of the lac dye of which, is the red colour of the gem on the diadem of Hari.

નમો વાકં બ્રૂમો નયનરમણીયાય પદયોઃ

પશૂનામીશાનઃ પ્રમદવનકંકેલિતરવે . ૮૫ .
નમો વાકં - uttering the word નમસ્ (obeissance)
બ્રૂમઃ - we tell
નયન રમણીયાય - to that which is delightful to the eye
પદયોઃ - to the feet
તવ - your
અસ્મૈ દ્વંદ્વાય - this pair
સ્ફુટ રુચિ - brightly lustrous
રસાલક્તકવતે - which has liquid lac dye
અસૂયતિ અત્યંતં - envies greatly
યત્ અભિહનનાય - to be struck by which
સ્પૃહયતે - desires
પશૂનાં ઈશનઃ - the lord of the souls (Siva)
પ્રમદ વન - the pleasure garden
કંકેલિ તરવે - the Asoka tree (which by poetic convention flowers if struck by the feet of noble women)
We tell the word `obeissance' to this your pair of feet, to that (pair) which is delightful to the eye, which is brightly lustrous (and) which has liquid lac dye, by which (feet) Siva desires to be struck, (and hence) envies greatly the Asoka tree of the pleasure garden.

મૃષા કૃત્વા ગોત્રસ્ખલનમથ વૈલક્ષ્ય નમિતં
લલાટે ભર્તારં ચરણકમલે તાડયતિ તે ,
ચિરાદંતઃ શલ્યં દહનકૃતમુન્મૂલિતવતા
તુલાકોટિક્કાણૈઃ કિલિકિલિતમીશાનરિપુણા . ૮૬ .
મૃષા કૃત્વા - having falsely (teasingly) comitted
ગોત્ર સ્ખલનં - the blunder of calling by a wrong name
અથ - after
વૈલક્ષ્ય નમિતં - bowing in shame (to appease the wife)
લલાટે - on the forehead
ભર્તારં - the husband (Siva)
ચરણ કમલે - the two lotus feet
તાડયતિ તે - your (feet) hit
ચિરાત્ - after a long time
અંતઃ શલ્યં - the thorn (of hostility) within
દહન કૃતં - was burnt
ઉન્મૂલિતવતા - by one who has had (the thorn) plucked out
તુલા કોટિ ક્કાણૈઃ - by the jingling of the anklet
કિલિકિલિતં - a sound of joy is made
ઈશાન રિપુણા - by the enemy of Isana (Siva), (by Cupid)
Your two lotus feet hit on the forehead of the husband, bowing in shame after having falsely (teasingly) comitted the blunder of calling (you) by a wrong name. A sound of joy is made (then) by the jingling of (your) anklet, by Cupid, who was burnt, and who has had the thorn (of hostility) from within plucked
out after a long time.

હિમાની હંતવ્યં હિમગિરિ નિવાસૈકચતુરૌ
નિશાયાં નિદ્રાણં નિશિ ચરમભાગે ચ વિશદૌ ,
વરં લક્ષ્મી પાત્રં શ્રિયમતિસૃજંતૌ સમયિનાં
સરોજં ત્વત્પાદૌ જનનિ જયતશ્ચિત્રમિહ કિમ્ . ૮૭ .
હિમાની - mass of snow
હંતવ્યં - which is destroyed
હિમ ગિરિ - snowy mountain
નિવાસૈકચતુરૌ - which are beautiful even when residing
નિશાયાં - at night
નિદ્રાણં - which sleeps (closed)
નિશિ - at night
ચરમ ભાગે ચ - as well as in the last part of (the night) (at dawn)
વિશદૌ - which are manifest (open)
વરં - which wishes to be
લક્ષ્મી પાત્રં - the abode of Lakshmi (to be passively occupied by Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth)
શ્રિયં અતિ સૃજંતૌ - which bestows wealth
સમયિનાં - for the followers of the Samaya school (wherein Siva and Sakti are held to be equal)
સરોજં - the lotus
ત્વત્ પાદૌ - your two feet (which are compared to a lotus in normal poetic convention)
જનનિ - Oh Mother! (Sakti)
જયતઃ - they triumph (over)
ચિત્રં ઇહ કિમ્ - what is the wonder here?
Oh Mother! your two feet which are beautiful even when residing in the snowy mountain, which are manifest (open) at night as well as in the last part of (the night), (and) which bestows wealth (on) the followers of the Samaya school, triumph over the lotus, which is destroyed by a mass of snow, which sleeps at night (and) which wishes to be the (passive) abode of Lakshmi. What is the wonder here?

પદં તે કીર્તીનાં પ્રપદમપદં દેવિ વિપદાં
કથં નીતં સદ્ભિઃ કઠિન કમઠી કર્પર તુલાં ,
કથં વા બાહુભ્યામુપયમનકાલે પુરભિદા
યદાદાય ન્યસ્તં દૃષદિ દયમાનેન મનસા . ૮૮ .
પદં - the abode
તે કીર્તીનાં - your fame
પ્રપદં - forefoot
અપદં - no resort
દેવિ - Oh Devi (effulgent one)! (Sakti)
વિપદાં - of calamity
કથં નીતં - how was it decided
સદ્ભિઃ - by the wise (poets)
કઠિન - hard
કમઠી કર્પર તુલાં - to be equal to the tortoise skull (shell) (in accordance to poetic convention)
કથં વા - How was it possibly
બાહુભ્યાં - by the two arms
ઉપયમન કાલે - at the time of marriage
પુર ભિદા - by the destroyer of the three cities of the demons or the three bodies of man (Siva)
યત્ આદાય - having taken which
ન્યસ્તં દૃષદિ - was placed on the mill stone (a ritual symbolic of being steadfast as a rock)
દયમાનેન મનસા - with a loving heart
Oh Devi, how was your forefoot, the abode of fame (and) no resort of calamity, decided by the wise (poets) to be equal to the hard tortoise skull? Having taken which (the forefoot) by the two arms, at the time of marriage, how was it possibly placed on the mill stone by Purabhida, with (apparently) a loving heart ?

નખૈર્નાકસ્ત્રીણાં કરકમલ સંકોચ શશિભિઃ
તરૂણાં દિવ્યાનાં હસત ઇવ તે ચંડિ ચરણૌ ,
ફલાનિ સ્વઃસ્થેભ્યઃ કિસલયકરાગ્રેણ દદતાં
દરિદ્રેભ્યો ભદ્રાં શ્રિયમનિશમહ્નાય દદતૌ . ૮૯ .
નખૈઃ - with nails
નાક સ્ત્રીણાં - of the celestial maidens
કર કમલ સંકોચ - the closing of the lotus like hands
શશિભિઃ - with the moons (moon like)
તરૂણાં - of the trees
દિવ્યાનાં - the celestial
હસત ઇવ - as if, laugh(ing)
તે ચંડિ ચરણૌ - your feet Oh Candi! (the fierce one), (Sakti)
ફલાનિ - fruits
સ્વઃ સ્થેભ્યઃ - to those who live in one's own abode (to the celestials)
કિસલય - tender shoots
કર અગ્રેણ - by the tips of the hands
દદતાં - which (the celestial trees) give
દરિદ્રેભ્યઃ - to the poor
ભદ્રાં - auspicious
શ્રિયં અનિશં - riches incessantly
અહ્નાય દદતૌ - which (the feet) give instantly
Oh Candi! your feet with the moon like nails (which cause) the closing of the lotus like hands of the celestial maidens, which instantly give to the poor auspicious riches incessantly are as if laughing at the celestial trees which give fruits (only) to (other) celestials by the tender shoots of the tips of the(ir) hands.

દદાને દીનેભ્યઃ શ્રિયમનિશમાશાનુસદૃશીં
અમંદં સૌંદર્ય પ્રકરમકરંદં વિકિરતિ ,
તવાસ્મિન્મંદાર સ્તબકસુભગે યાતુ ચરણે
નિમજ્જન્મજ્જીવઃ કરણચરણઃ ષટ્ ચરણતામ્ . ૯૦ .
દદાને - which give
દીનેભ્યઃ - to the poor
શ્રિયં - wealth
અનિશં - incessantly
આશા અનુસદૃશીં - according to desire
અમંદં - great
સૌંદર્ય પ્રકર - the bunch of flowers of beauty
મકરંદં - the honey (of flowers)
વિકિરતિ - scatters
તવ અસ્મિન્ - this, your
મંદાર સ્તબક - the bunch of flowers of the (celestial) coral tree
સુભગે - auspicious
યાતુ - may it proceed to
ચરણે - into the foot
નિમજ્જન્ - plunging
મત્ જીવઃ - my life
કરણ ચરણઃ - sense organs as feet
ષટ્ ચરણતામ્ - the state of being a six (five sense organs plus mind) legged one (a bee)
May my life with the (five) sense organs (plus the mind) as feet proceed to the state of being a six legged one (a bee), plunging into this your (lotus) foot, auspicious like the bunch of flowers of the coral tree, which scatters the honey of the bunch of flowers of great beauty, which give to the poor wealth according to desire incessantly.
