hara vilAsam - a synopsis

There are but a few more stagings of this dance drama in the remaining time the Kuchipudi Art Academy troupe of Dr. vempati China Satyam from Madras is going to be in the country. After I saw the drama "hara vilAsam", in Detroit in early September, I was inspired to wrote the story (as depicted in the drama) in "mutyAla sarAlu" style, and here it is to share with you all.

For those interested, the structure for mutyAla saram is quite simple. (gurajADa's dEsamunu prEmincumannA - is in this verse form, so are some of SrISrI's - what comes to mind is -"rudramAmbA, bhdrakALI lOcanOjjvala rOculEvI..) Usually the verse has three (in some cases more) 14-matra lines, followed by one 9-matra line. The 14-matra line is divided into four groups (gaNas) of 3,4,3,4 matras. The three-matra gaNa can be a III, or a UI. The four-matra gaNas can be any of the possible set (UU, UII, IUI, IIU, IIII - these are all the possibilities) except one of them. Which one? Left here as an exercise. The concluding short line is 3,4,2 with the restriction that the last syllable be a guruvu.

There are no yati, prAsa requirements, but it need not be said that having them whenever possible enhances the readability (singability), and memoriza- bility of it.

With that intro, here it is:
