    I read all the comments. Thanks for your interest. I am traveling in India (primarily to college campuses) and am not getting access to a reliable Internet connection
    to respond to each individual comment. (So much for India’s much touted leadership in IT). That is the reason I am writing this in English. Yesterday, one woman called and told me that I should use English names to all chemical elements (including the replacement of those well established names like baMgAraM, veMDi, etc.). This is a difficult thing to resolve. Insofar as using names proposed by Telugu Akademi, I wonder how those proposed names came into existence. Did the people who proposed those names really tried to use those words in a paragarph on a science subject? This is not a rhetorical question. I am simply curious.

When you reach the rim of the disk, you will “fall” out of the disk. Not so with a circular string or wire. Trust me, it is a struggle to write these things in Telugu not because it is hard to write in Telugu but because we do not have a tradition to read such matters in Telugu. If we keep trying, eventually one among us will find a better way of constructing such sentences. I hope that this explanation in English helps.

    The article by Shri Vemuri is thought provoking and informative. However, the discussion as to writing of scientific subjects in Telugu is quite interesting. I am of the opinion that, Telugu language may not be compatible for Technical, Medical, Mathematics, Law, Science. My opinion may not be taken as contempt for Telugu language. I am also ardent fan of Telugu language. I take price in our rich Telugu literature, but, I feel rather uncomfortable while trying to attempt Technical and other scientific subjects in Telugu.     I am afraid, neither can we say Telugu, or any language, is incompatible for Technical, Medical, Medical, Mathematics, Law, Science, nor can we argue English is always most compatible either. A language may just become as compatible as made out by the competency and ingenuity of its users.

    Merely 400+ years ago, English did not hold any special place in Sciences. We know major works of Newton including Principia were in Latin. And even century ago Einstein’s papers were first published in German. May be I am biased- one of my professors renowned for his work in parallel algorithms wrote his Ph.D thesis in Hebrew. For whatever reasons, many brilliant minds have been sharing their most creative thoughts largely in English for many, many years and therein, I believe, lies its strength and reason for “compatibility”. I do not know Chinese, but know there is lot of effort going on to make many/any scientific works in Chinese. No idea how compatible Chinese will be, say, 200 years from now, but with present massive effort it certainly appears to become only more, not less, compatible than ever before.

    My point is Telugu can be made compatible to the extent it is put to best use by best minds. It may not appear so now, but with unceasing and increasing effort it can only become more compatible. May be not in our lifetime. But it is guaranteed to remain incompatible and worse become even stagnant- without effort from our generation. And to that reason alone, I see a great purpose and even a greater cause to write such in Telugu. And no words of encouragement and support seem enough.

    Furthermore, asking who will read these and get benefit seems unhelpful. If Nannayya thought who would read his work in Telugu, when Sanskrit was so prevailing, popular and in esteem, we would not be having thousand-year legacy of his work and language today. Isn’t it?

    I appreciate the point made by Srinivas Nagulapalli. I made it very clear that I am an ardent fan of Telugu Literature and take pride for it. But, being a legal professional, I can at least vouch for my statement that Telugu language is not compatible for Law. India has borrowed the present form of of administration of justice from British and British in turn from Latin. The maxims and theories of law have been developed in English and Latin and as long as we follow this system of administration of justice, in my opinion,not only Telugu, but none of the any other languge is suitable therefor. In view thereof, I thought, Medicine, technology and other modern sciences having been developed by mainly western ocieties, Telugu is not suitable for those fields either. The other main reason for English’s compatibility is that English widely spoken and understood by large part of the world. Therefore, we should rather enjoy the richness of our Telugu literature and continue working for its further enrichment by encouraging people to bring out good works in Telugu, while accepting the fact the fact about English’s adaptability.

    This is purely my personal opinion and I may not be correct, open for correction.

    I agree reading in Telugu writings of law or Science may appear strange or hard, but that can be changed with a little effort and getting used to.

    I have a confession. When I first ate pizza I thought even dogs in India may not eat it. And Western dance was crazy. And heard any devotional song, wondered why can’t they sing like Ghantasala. Until I’ve been to Washington DC thought “cherry blossom” is shoe polish. Because thats all I knew then. But now, I enjoy pizza and am sure dogs in India eat too.Can
    see any dance, not always enjoy! and hear any song for sometime:) Now I wonder how hard can it be to read any thing in Telugu, a language that I already know a little.

    My point is it is not who developed any field, but how we make it into our own that determines largely the ease of use and compatibility. Vemuri gaari article itself has many examples. His saying creatively# ulliguDDu, pUrI pOlika #etc. talk more closely and directly to me than English equivalents. After all, language is all about talking closely and directly right?!

    The views of Rama garu and vemuri garu are in good spirit. It is undisputed fact that, Newton’s research was not in English, but in German. There is no doubt, we can also develop telugu scientific vocabulary. But, my question is whether it is warranted? Presently, most of the scientific research is going on in English and majority of journals are published in English. English is widely spoken and understood language. Science and Technological research, in today’s context can progress only when it has worldwide scientific community’s reach. I believe, no special purpose would be served or any extra benefit would accrue to the Telugu Language if we require people to study science and allied subjects in Telugu, rather it will be not in the interest of the development of science and our Telugus. If people of every other languagae/country thinks in the same way, there will be no progress of science at all. I further believe that, proficiency in English is the basic reason for success of our Telugus worldwide. Yes, as Rama Garu stated language does not mean only literature. We should understand the basic purpose of language is communication. But, our Telugu literature and culture are very rich. Therefore, we should make understand our next generations about the richness of our Telugu literature, language, it’sbeauty and ensure that, the language flourishes forever.     Majority of Netwon’s works we know, other than Opticks, were first published in Latin, not German. Also, we do not require any one to study science and allied subjects in Telugu. All this effort seems only to make Science a little more available and accessible in Telugu also. It only adds and does not subtract any thing from any one. No loss or pain for any one, just gain and help for some one.
    English howsoever helpful, neither seems to be a necessary condition, nor even a sufficient condition for progress of science, Hard to ignore huge strides in science and technology, including in space sciences by neighbouring China without much love lost for English.

    I feel it better to respond in the desired language, which is neither the authoritative nor the most spoken one, either in the globe or even in Europe, as was mentioned. By accepting one side that Telugu is no way less competitive with any other universal languages, it is very much astonishing to mention, Telugu to limit with literature etc. and to leave monopoly to English in sciences. Does it mean that all sciences were scripted only in English and all the words we read as English are from English vocabulary? Was this accepted even in Europe? Why we the Indians, that too Telugus crave for English? Is it because we were once a “Common Wealth” (common property being slaves)country?

    When we compete in literature, why not in sciences, with little effort, as was mentioned in my earlier comment? Are we incapable or is it lack of initiation? In what way “our” initiation in making efforts to take the sciences to the village level in mother tongue, curtails the advancement of our future generations? Love towards mother tongue is not at all prejudiced. Rather, it is a pride. If it is believed that we are “Developed” only by shunning Telugu and embracing English then what Ms.Rama wrote is absolutely right.

    It is not out of place to mention that the entire judicial business, whether it is argument or presentation, is taking place in Andhra exclusively in Telugu only but not at all in English as was mentioned impossible by Mr.Hareesh. When Mr. Hareesh made up his mind and concludes that discussion of subjects in Telugu, other than literature is a crime and deception to future generations, no words left to answer. Any way it is very much out of way that of our comments and counter comments upon the language, the subject was discussed, rather than the subject.
